Silvio Maraini

Silvio Maraini is a 34 year old, black and white landscape photographer, from Switzerland. He has taken breathtaking pictures in Alaska, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, & Corsica. He enjoys using black and white because he feels color takes away from the picture and draws the viewers attention away from the picture because they are focusing on the color. Silvio's interest in photography was sparked by viewing pictures of one of our previous photographers of the week, Ansel Adams. After seeing his pictures he took his fathers' camera out and begin photographing.

I like this picture because it potratrays all the actions of the waterfall...its GREAT!

Julia Margaret Cameron

Julia was born in 1815 in Calcutta, into a family of four children. When her husband went away on a trip, her daughter gave her a camera and Julia's interest in photography was sparked. She began by taking photos of everyone she saw, experimenting with different techniques, due to her wish to branch away from photography at the time. Also due to her use of glass negatives many of her subjects had to sit for a really long time. Julia Margaret Camerons ambition as a photographer was to secure [for photography] the character and uses of high art by combining real and ideal, and sacrificing nothing of truth by all possible devotion to poetry and beauty." I think she succeeded beautifully.I like this picture because it is so nice. It makes it look as if the little girl really is an angel. Its awesome!!

Sebastiao Salgado

In 1944 a photographer was born in Brazil. Throughout his life Sebastiao Salgado got many pictures published. However his art work was based on the poverty of humankind. He was a photographer at heart, but before that he was an economist, and it showed through his photography.

I like this picture....

I like this picture, as well as many others by Dan Eldon, because Eld0n was trying to show more than just a pretty picture. Eldon was trying to show the hardships and the lives of the people of Africa.

William Wegman

William Wegman is an artist that takes a lot of pictures of animals, with a specialty in dogs. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1965 and had been working with animals ever since. There was one dog, named Man Ray that he worked with for over twelve years.

I like this picture. The dog looks tired, and Wegman definitely captured that. Its a really nice picture.

Stieglitz

As a student studying photojournalism I find the work of Alfred Stieglitz interesting. In the 1920's Stieglitz fought for photography as a form of actual art work. During his career, which started in the late 1800's, Steiglitz had many critics who thought of photograpy as a scientific exploration on not necessarily an artist. He became famous because of his personal photography and because of the way he fought to get photography considered an artform. While in Europe Stieglitz photographed scenery and landscaping, basically pleasent pictures. When he came to the U.S. his pictures changed to photograph less fashionable things.

One of my favorite pictures by Stieglitz is called "The Steerage."
It shows a group of immigrants sitting on a boat. It shows how life in 1907 was full of immigrants trying to get a better life in America and the troubles they endured to get there.
Enjoy the pic.
